The Perils of the Grey Market

Personally, I love Strawberrynet - I know people have had bad experiences, but in the 30+ orders I have done with them over the years, I can only think of one or two duds. Today I'm going to show you one of them.

I'm a big fan of Benefit Creaseless Creams, but I buy them on Strawberrynet because in Australia they cost $34AUD, which is effing ridiculous for ONE eyeshadow. The first ones I bought cost me about $17 each (plus my 10% loyalty discount) well over a year ago and they're still going strong. That price is about what they cost retail in the US (maybe slightly more now).

Clockwise from top left: Flatter Me, RSVP, Honey Bunny, Tattle Tale.

These are all still creamy and smooth, and not coming away from the edge of the jar. I store them upside down as that is supposed to help keep them longer (though I don't really get why).

Now these next two I bought around this time last year, and they were on sale - I think they were about $10AUD each.

From left: Get Figgy, Strut

Look at that. Get Figgy has just fallen apart completely and is dry and pretty much useless. Strut is usable but takes a lot of work as it's also dry and has come away from the edge of the jar.

So the lesson here is, don't buy cream eyeshadows from Strawberrynet when they're on sale, because the reason they're on sale is in that picture above.

As an aside, the only thing I ever really avoided on Strawberrynet was sunscreen, because it has a limited lifespan and you never really know how old their stuff is. However, the other day I read an article about the expiry times on products with active ingredients, so I think from now on I'll be a bit more careful of the skincare I buy from there as well. I'm pretty safe with my Clarins cleansers and toners and whatnot, but I probably wouldn't get anything that had retinol or salicylic acid or the like.

So peeps, are you a fan of Strawberrynet or are you one of those with a horror story about them? What do/don't you buy from there?

  1. I bought a napoleon perdis gel eyeliner from the NP concept store at Bris city, and after a few months it dried out and seperated from the outside of the jar too. Apparently if you add a little bit of baby oil to it you can mix it back together. I never tried though, i just threw it away.

  2. Ugh, that sounds like hard work, Tegan. To quote The Simpsons (who seem to have a quote for every occasion), CAN'T SOMEONE ELSE DO IT?

  3. These shadows look really pretty! Shame that those other two have messed up :(

  4. You're giving me some food for thought here. I bought a glycolactic peel from strawberrynet (my only order) and was confused because it does nothing for me when I've read glowing reviews about it on Sephora. I wonder if it's old?!?

And thanks for reminding me to use up my shadow pots before they get dry. What I'm "saving" them for, I don't know.

  5. nice collection. I always screw my benefit creams on tightly so that they don't dry out.

  6. Have ordered lots - nothing bads happened yet. I did buy a mascara recently, which I swore I'd never do on account of the 3 month shelf life, but it's been performing in the best possible way and nothing bads happened.

this is all a long way of saying that unless something is wtf expensive on strawberrynet, I'm going to take the risk.

  7. HS, they are gorgeous shadows - great for a quick swipe when you want to look 'done' but only have seconds to get organised. :-)

Liz, a friend of mine bought a Lancome moisturiser from Snet that was definitely off, so I'd be careful with the skincare. I think with high turnover products that don't have a lot of active things in them it's probably a good risk. I get all my Clarins from there, other than sunscreen.

Justine, I screw the lids on tightly as well, and I have weak girly wrists so it's often a struggle to get them off again!

Suzanne, Snet is awesome for expenso mascaras. I get Chanel ones from there and have never had a dud yet.

  8. I read recently about how to give pot eyeliners (are they even called that?) the kick of life back - wonder if it'd work for the cream eyeshadows? Anyway it was put it in a ziplock bag that has no holes and put it in hot water for a bit then mix it up. Not sure if it'd work for eyeshadows but worth a try anyway?

  9. I personally love strawberrynet and have never had a problem, but such a shame about your shadows! they looked gorgeous... wonder if you could fix them somehow?

  10. Suki, I might get Lily to give that a go for me - I'm too lazy, lol.

Jo, I love Snet too, but you take your chances with places like that, I guess. There's no way of telling how long stuff has been sitting around in their warehouse!

  11. Oh goodness! I've never actually bought from Strawberry, seems like I hear nothing but problems about them for some reason. I'm sorry your cream shadows are bunk. :(

  12. Oh, I'm pretty philosophical about it. I rarely have problems with them so I'm not too fussed about the occasional mishap. :-)

  13. I have placed over 40 orders, but recently I have had a really bad run. Now, I won't buy mascara, eyeshadow, sunscreen from them. I will buy haircare, foundation, perfume and tools/brushes. Where ever possible I try and keep the $$$ in Australia but sometimes it is just too exxy...

  14. I've never had an issue with StrawberryNet and have ordered from them lots, but that's a super good point about skincare with active ingredients.

  16. Karyn, I've bought mascara a lot and never had a problem. Now you've got me worried!

Stacey, I had never thought about the active ingredients thing before but it makes perfect sense. I never buy sunscreen from them for that reason so of course it would be the same for other products. Der!

Kumiko, they're a great source for perfumes, and so much cheaper than buying retail! I don't believe their products are fake - I've certainly never had that happen.
