MAC Dupes..... or arrrrre theyyyyy.... *shifty eyes*

The other day I was looking for things to do in order to avoid something I was supposed to be doing, and I decided to check out some supposed MAC dupes to see how close they were. These were swatched over Benefit LemonAid, as usual (look, I have bucketloads of the stuff and I need to get rid of it, okay?), and modelled by the lovely and obliging Noodle Arms. Just after I'd finished applying all of swatches and we were about to go outside with the camera, she suddenly turned pale and said, "I feel sick!", and bolted off to the toilet. I'm slightly ashamed to say that my first thought was, "Don't smudge the swatches if you throw up!" She didn't, and it was a false alarm - a momentary feeling of nausea. After a few minutes we were back on track. I made caring noises and asked her if she was okay to do the photos, and she carried on like the trooper she is. Hurrah for Noodles!

First up we have MAC Shimmermoss and CoverGirl Aqua Paradise. Aqua Paradise is one of the items I bought in my recent Drugstore.com haul, and I bought it specifically because it is supposed to be a dupe of Shimmermoss and I wanted to see if that was true. It was only $2.50, so I didn't really care one way or the other what it was like. Just as well, because it's arse. You can see it's all kind of crushed and mushed. I did that, trying to get some colour from it. It's really hard and impossible to use without scraping the hell out of it. Even then the colour wasn't great. I had to pack on a ton to get a comparable level of depth to Shimmermoss. Here's a closer look of the mess I had to make of it.

But aside from the issue of its general crapness, is Aqua Paradise a dupe for Shimmermoss?

Shimmermoss is on the left, Aqua Paradise is on the right. They're similar, but not exactly the same - Aqua Paradise is a bit more blue. It's just occurred to me now that I have quite a few teal eye shadows and can probably find a closer dupe for Shimmermoss. I should have thought to do that - perhaps I'll do it later this week.

Anyway, what do you think? Dupe - yay or nay? I have a couple more of these - are you interested in seeing them, or am I just banging on about something everyone already knows about?

  1. Love a good teal eye. I have a brilliant Bourjois shimmery liquid liner that is the absolute goods. I wore it to Lady gaga!

  2. As a layman when it comes to MAC - to my untrained eye they do look extremely close in colour in the pic....BUT I totally understand the frustration it took in getting any colour payoff :( Hate it when the shadow looks great but ends up being disappointing - fiddly, time consuming application drives me up the wall!

  3. As an aside - what's the Benefit Lemon Aid like?
Is it ok or crap hence why you're trying to use it up? I've often thought about purchasing it but figured I already have a few shadow primers to use up, so not a lot of point....although it's meant to correct eye lid redness or something? That would've come in handy recently...

  4. Hmmm, I's say they're fairly similar but I prefer the Shimmermoss. We cant get Cover Girl here in the UK but apparently some of their eye shadows are fantastic - been thinking of ordering a few online but I kinda rely on swatches like these to decide whether or not something is worth buying! :)

I love dupe posts so hopefully you'll do some more! There's nothing better than spending £2 on something when the alternative is £15 ♥

  5. Interestingly similar, I can't stand shitty shadows that have no colour pay off though hehe makes me want shimmermoss though :D

  6. Melbournite, LemonAid's okay, but nothing special. It's more of a colour corrector for redness and discoloured eyelids than a primer - if you use it as a primer it does tend to crease after a few hours. I find it's good for making eyeshadow colours more intense, though. But there are plenty of cheaper products that will do that - the NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk, for example.

  7. I'm obsessed with teal eyeliner at the moment.

And I'd love to see more of these posts!

  8. They are similiar, but even for $2.50, there is no point if the colour payoff is crappy.

On another note, I'd love to see more dupe posts :)
