NYX Eyeshadow Trio In The Woods

I don't know about you, but I just don't feel that the colours in the NYX In The Woods trio go together at all. There's a super shimmery, pinky-yellow champagne highlight, a matte rust brown with warm reddish undertones, and a shimmery cool-toned taupe. It's just not happening for me - though I do like the taupe quite a lot I already have at least half a dozen others so this one doesn't get much of a look in.

As with many (though strangely not all) of the NYX trios, these are quite powdery and there' s a bit of fall out. The pigmentation is pretty good (not as good as the singles, but better than the 10 shade Runway palettes) and they're cheap as chips on websites such as Cherry Culture, Nonpareil Boutique and Shopcraze (though you can get gouged on shipping depending on how much you're buying, so that's something to watch out for). If you're happy to pay Aussie prices, you can also get them at Crush Cosmetics.

First thing in the morning

Late in the afternoon

Against my better judgement I applied all three of these colours one very early morning before work, even though I could see in the palette they didn't go together. It just didn't look right so I ended up blending and blending and blending until the darker crease colour virtually disappeared and just melded into the taupe lid colour. The highlight colour is quite shimmery and has a lot more Vegas Showgirl going on than I generally like. It was very difficult to try and tone it down once I had applied it and seen the effect. I felt self-conscious all day wearing it, and Jacquie agreed it was a bit much when I asked her what she thought (very handy having another makeup junkie to sit next to at work sometimes).

There was some fading by the end of the day, but it actually wasn't as much as it looks like in the photograph - it's just the lighting. It had pretty reasonable lasting power for a drugstore eyeshadow.

I just really don't like the colour combination of this palette. It's weird.

So peeps, do you have this palette? What do you think of it? Are you a fan of NYX trios generally?

  1. Nice! I like neutrals with a bit of oomph :)

I have the purple trio and like it very much. Generally, palettes are a waste on me as I hardly ever wear all the three colours co-ordinatedly. But that is the point of palettes, isn't it?! Oh well :D

  2. Su, I'm a bit the same. I generally find there's one or two colours I really love and use all the time, and then there's always one I'm kind of meh about and it gets wasted.

  3. Wow, it looks pretty pigmented! Great swatches, thanks x

  4. I think the champagne and taupe would go nicely together, but that rust throws the trio off. Although that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me because I hardly ever use shades from a single palette.

I've never tried NYX trios, but these swatches look quite nice so I may have to check them out.

  5. I have this palette, it's actually one of my trio faves. I like the shades together actually, I often opt for a red brown in my crease and the taupe reminds me of satin taupe a bit.

  6. I have this palette too. I like all the colors in it, but they are quite powdery.

  7. Ooh, I don't have this palette but thanks for creating a lemming hehe. I have several other NYX palettes and really do love the quality for the price! These particular shadows remind me of MAC eye shadows :)

  8. I think you're right, Caitlin - it's the rust colour that jars me. The other two together are okay.
