NYX HD Eye Shadow Base

I have to admit, I'm a bit 'meh' about Urban Decay Primer Potion. I think it makes eyeshadow go on a bit patchy, and it creases on me after a few hours. (I've yet to try Too Faced Shadow Insurance, so I have no opinion on that.) It's one of those products that in my opinion is massively over-rated. However, I use it because I have oily eyelids (how does that even happen?), and I need something to keep the eyeshadow there for as long as possible, but I'm always trying other products to see if they're any better.

I bought the NYX HD Eye Primer during the last 20% off sale at Nonpareil, its usual cost is about $7USD. It's very similar in look and texture to UDPP, no doubt deliberately - NYX seem to be a bit shameless with duping. It has a sponge applicator and the same annoying quality that the UDPP packaging has - it's hard to get to the side bits when you've used up the middle bit.

I tried it with NARS Ondine - again working on the theory that people don't notice if there are minor issues with neutral eyeshadow colours, so if it creased after ten minutes it wouldn't be so noticeable. I applied my makeup at about 6:30am, and it had creased by lunch time. Not hugely, but certainly noticeably (if I closed my eyes).

Here it is at about 5pm (ignore eyebrows - still trying to regrow them!), and you can see it's creased quite a bit. However, for a cheap product, I can live with this. It's not much worse than UDPP is on  me, so I'll keep using it until something better comes along.

  1. Yeh, oily lidded here too, I may investigate the too faced, I have udpp and an elf primer already they both are the same on me really, this nyx one looks like the same texture as the elf.

  2. Same same. I use Laura Mercier Eye Basics as my eye primer. There's a new Australis one out that I'd like to try too.

  3. I quite like the slightly creased look so I've never bothered with an e/s primer before. But for $7, I might just have to try some.

  4. I've been using the UDPP all along and haven't had much complains about it. It doesn't really crease on me either or maybe I just never paid too much attention XD

I have Too Faced primer on the way, so will report with a comparison post when I have both!

  5. I was considering buying the urban decay one so this has made me think again! Thanks x

  6. I have to say UDPP and TFSI are pretty much identical. What tips the balance for TFSI is that I find it eaiser to apply to my dry eyelids. Not sure you'd like TFSI for that reason but worth the test to be sure.

I am also keen to try the Palladio one too.

  7. UDPP works fine for me, but I find it makes it difficult to blend sometimes!

  8. I also find the $3 ELF mineral eye primer works well too, I'll be interested to try this one :)

  9. The Too Faced One is a bit better, IMO. I have oily eyelids, too (I agree, how does that even happen???) and I've learned that my longest eyeshadow usually comes from patting the color on and then blending it in small windsheild wiper strokes.

  10. I use Concrete Minerals, but for me it works the exact same way UDPP does, so I don't know if I'd recommend it for you. I bought some TFSI, the 'Candlelight' kind, and it ATE the color away from the shadows I was using. You couldn't even tell I had any on, it was so weird. I guess it just doesn't work with my skin chemistry. Have you tried the Detrivore brand primer? It does not work for me but I know a lot of people like it.

  11. i have oily eyelid (and i have dry skin!) and have serious crease problem. haven't tried UDPP, but have tried a few primers such as elf, laura mercier and benefit, they all creased on me. TFSI is the only thing that works.

  12. Jade, the NYX is probably similar to the ELF one.

Natalie, I read something somewhere about the Australis one and it's in the back of my mind to check out.

Michelle, you're lucky if you can get away with "slightly creased" - if I don't wear a primer, my eyeshadow disappears within an hour!

Celeste, I'd be interested to see you do a comparison post!

Nicola, this one is worth checking out first but I guess if you're in the UK it depends on how easily you can get hold of it and whether you have to pay a load in shipping. :-)

Jacquie, TFSI is definitely on my must try list, I'll get there eventually...

VM, I agree that UDPP makes it a bit hard to blend eyeshadow. Kind of a pain!

Tracey, I tried one of the ELF primers and I didn't like it, but I don't remember whether it was the $3 one or the $1 one! One day I'll buy both and try them again, lol.

Sam, what is it with the oily eyelids? Of all the annoying beauty issues to have. Grrr!

Heather, I have tried Detrivore - it makes the colours awesome, but it does crease after a while. I've got a post on the way testing it with UDPP underneath. Pics are done, just have to get around to writing it.

prettymom, the more I hear about TFSI the more I want to try it. I think it might be my next beauty purchase...

  13. My eyelids are oily too. I've used UDPP, TFSI, and LMEB, and TFSI is my favourite. UDPP is a little drying on my lids, LMEB doesn't work on me (it would be great for girls needing a 'light hold'), so TFSI it is. Curiously, like some mascaras, I find that this works better and better the older to tube gets. I think as it dries out a little, the product becomes more effective.
